Controlling The Thoughts

As God’s earth born children it is our duty to exert full control over our imagination and our thoughts. It is a formidable task keeping the uncontrolled mind set on heavenly subjects; but if the thoughts are not correctly trained it is impossible for the love of God to grow in the soul. The mind must be absorbed with holy and eternal things or in feeding on superficial and trifling subjects only, it will foster shallow and frivolous thoughts. By advancing both the moral and intellectual powers through wise discipline, they will both be improved by the exercise.

All our thoughts must be in harmony with the divine will of God, and our feelings also must be brought under the control of reason; for the thoughts and feelings combine to make up the moral character. We must not allow our imagination to run riot and chase after every vain and unprofitable thing. To have power over our thoughts and feelings is more to be prized than all of the houses, cars, boats, gold and diamonds in the whole world!

It is required for our happiness and peace in this life for our thoughts to be focused on Jesus Christ. As we think in our hearts, so are we. Our improvement in moral perfection depends on right thinking and right doing. Impure and evil thoughts will destroy the soul. The power of God will convert the heart, and cleanse and ennoble the thoughts. Unless we make a determined effort to keep all our thoughts fixed on Christ, the grace of God cannot manifest itself in the life. The mind must be engaged in this spiritual battle. Every thought and habit must be brought into obedience to Christ, and under His wise control.

We need to be constantly aware of the elevating power that pure thoughts have on the soul. And we need to be very aware of the damaging effect that evil thoughts have on us. Let us focus our thoughts on holy things. Let them be true and pure. God has provided all of the necessary grace that we may cultivate our thoughts correctly. We have the exalted privilege of bringing the mind into harmony with the Divine Mind of God. God’s truth will perfect us soul, body and spirit; and we shall be empowered to rise above all the temptations and allurements to evil that abound in this world.

When we cooperate with the Holy Spirit of God, He will help us to discipline our thoughts, which will then enable us to control our words. Victory in this most important process will bring peace, serenity, fulfillment, satisfaction and rest.
