It is our privilege and duty to do all in our power to preserve our physical and mental health. It is very easy to lose our health, but it is a very difficult thing to regain it. The human body is a miraculous piece of living machinery, and we must not impair this wonderful living organism by abuse of any kind. We shouldn’t overwork or overtax ourselves, for we are then living by borrowing capital from our system and weakening our vital force.
Whenever we violate the laws of health, we will, at some stage, suffer for it. In this busy, fast paced world, much of the exhaustion, and wearing out and breaking down of our life force is not the will of God for us, but we bring it upon ourselves by not following the wise counsel that God has given to His Earth-born children in His Word.
How often we indulge the habit of turning day into night and night into day. We should be up early when all of nature is awake, rejoicing to hear the birds who rise full of vigor singing their sweet songs. It is essential for good health to have regularity in going to bed and rising in the morning. The work of building up the body takes place during the hours of rest, and so it is essential that sleep should be abundant and regular.
God has given us the quiet night hours for rest and sleep in order to invigorate our body, and we should not recklessly waste these precious hours. If we would form habits of regularity and order, we would improve in health, in spirit, in memory, and in temperament. If we honor God by acting our part, He will do His glorious part and preserve our health.
Being sensible and moderate in eating, drinking, working and resting, we can do for ourselves what no one else can do for us. The blessing of good health is a tremendous treasure. To possess it is more to be prized than any amount of money or fame… It is the greatest possession we can have. In fact, even if we possess riches, honor and fame, we will not be happy if we do not enjoy the benefits of good health as well.
