The mind naturally inclines toward amusement, self-gratification and pleasure. It is the policy of the enemy of our souls to produce an abundance of this. Satan seeks to fill the minds of God’s Earth-born children with an appetite for entertainment and pleasures, so that we have no time to stop and think, and ask ourselves the question – how is it with my soul? The love of entertainment and amusement is contagious. Our minds hurry on from one amusement and pleasure to another, ever seeking something new.
Our ability to enjoy the true pleasures and wonders of Heaven will be in proportion to the aspiration and yearning that we have for our future life. In this earthly life we are given opportunity to develop love and appreciation for God and heavenly things. If the demands and concerns of life are permitted to absorb all our thought and attention from day to day, we risk weakening our spiritual powers through lack of exercise. If our minds are dwelling exclusively on earthly affairs, every opening through which God’s transforming grace may enter is sealed shut, and we do not recognize the light and truth that God sends to us from Heaven.
It is our solemn duty to guard every access point to our souls through which Satan will seek to gain an entrance and overthrow us with his artful temptations and lead us away captive from our Heavenly Father. We must begin at once to pull out every harmful and dangerous weed from the garden of the heart; and by the glorious grace of Jesus Christ working in our souls, allow no plants to grow and thrive other than those precious plants that will bear fruit unto eternal life.
It is our wonderful privilege to cherish in the garden of the heart the beautiful plants of Godliness, honesty, purity, loveliness, unselfishness, kindness and compassion. Let us pull out and shun every plant that is unlike our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
